BBC's One Show Feature demonstrates MSecurePod in action at Manchester Airport

MSecurePod is a Department for Transport (DfT) approved biometric access control solution designed to enforce high security levels in airports by controlling movement of airport staff into the restricted zones. Traditionally airports have relied on access control cards to regulate the movement of airport staff from landside to airside.  To ensure adequate security levels, an Airport Security Officer (ASO) is deployed at each entrance, enforcing a standard procedure of checking ID against the pass, before they go through the X-ray and metal detector checks. This methodology has been prone to security lapses due to a number of issues including misuse of stolen cards, ASO's inability to recognise staff from the ID cards and ASO collaboration. Besides this the airports have had to foot the bill of employing a large number of ASOs.

MSecurePod eliminates these issues by automating staff access into the restricted zones across the airport. The solution integrates three key components (a) biometrics (iris recognition, hand recognition or face recognition) (b) sonic detection volumetric portal and (c) the existing airport card management system to bring together a comprehensive biometric access control solution that meets and exceeds the security challenges faced by airports today.

  • Biometrics - MSecurePod is a highly configurable solution and uses iris recognition to securely identify a person's identity before granting him access into the restricted zone. The solution can be configured to work with other biometric modalities.
  • Sonic Detection Volumetric Portal - enforces that only one person can gain access into the secure portal eliminating tailgating. The biometric device will not be activated if more than one person enters the portal.
  • Airport Card Management System - the solution easily integrates with the existing card management system at the airports. As a consequence there are no disruptions to the existing procedures and operations.

MSecurePod in Action

  • Gaining access into the restricted zones is quick and user-friendly.
  • The airport staff use the existing card and pin combination to gain access into the portal.
  • The portal performs a volumetric check to ensure only one person is in the portal and activates the biometric device.
  • Biometric verification is performed and on confirmation of the identity access is granted into the restricted zone.

MSecurePod Key Features

Increase security - MSecurePod ensures that only the authorised staff member can gain access into the restricted zone. Foolproof identity assurance is enforced by using a combination of airport pass (something that belongs to you) and biometrics (something you are).

Reduced operational overhead - because the process is automated the ASO requirement to physically man the entry points is considerably reduced. Our research indicates a reduction of close to 30% man power at the entry and exit points.

MSecurePod is a robust solution which offers a quick return on investment to airports by allowing ASO's to be deployed in passenger areas, cutting overall manpower requirements and overhead cost. This solution is currently operational in all 3 terminals at the Manchester International Airport and is being rolled out into other airports across the UK and Europe.
